SANYO Announces the World First*1 Rice Bread Cooker "GOPAN"
that Can Easily Bake Rice Bread from Rice Grain at Home

   Tokyo, July 13, 2010 - SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO) is pleased to announce the release of the world first*1 rice bread cooker "GOPAN " that can easily bake rice bread in every home from rice grain. The product will be released for sale on October 8, 2010.
   Rice is the principal food in Japan. However, the consumption of domestic rice has decreased by half compared to 1962. It is feared that the decreasing rice demand may negatively impact the development of technology in the agriculture field, and therefore slow improvement in the taste of rice, which will further contribute to the domestic consumption decrease. Meanwhile, the number of people concerned about the reliability of food has increased. Also, more and more people are checking farm producer's information before buying cooking ingredients.

   SANYO is committed to creating products, which contribute to increasing rice consumption. One such product is the pressure IH type rice cooker "Odoridaki" that applies heat to each rice grain, and therefore cooks delicious rice. Another one is "Rice-flour bread maker" that bakes bread with rice flour. Both products represent leading technology in the industry.
   And now "GOPAN" that can easily make bread from rice grain at home has come to market.Eating habits have changed. In this context SANYO proposes an alternative food life by introducing GOPAN. Using it will naturally increase rice consumption and change the eating habits of people.
   SANYO is aiming to contribute to improving the reliability of food and rate of self-sufficiency in Japan by proposing a concept of "Healthy, happy rice life for all people in the world" for the future.

   The food self-sufficiency rate of our country is 41%, and the minimum levels in the advanced countries. Our Japanese Government formulated the target to improve the food self sufficiency rate to 50% in ten years in March this year. The expansion of the rice consumption is extremely important for the target's achieving.
   "GOPAN" can easily bake rice bread in every home from rice grain. For baking rice bread domestic ingredients will be used and therefore their potential demand will increase,
   "GOPAN" is expected not only to create a change in raising the food self-sufficiency rate.

Main Features

1. World First! "Fully-Automatic Rice Mill Function" to turn "Rice" at Home into Bread

   Over the years, SANYO has been distributing bread makers which can bake rice-flour bread. But, because of the limited availability of rice flour and consequently its high price, rice-flour bread baking has not caught on with consumers. Against this background, with a view to increase rice consumption in Japan, SANYO has been engaged in research and development of a system to make home-milled rice flour. However, a number of challenges had to be resolved before realizing a product ready for commercialization. By taking a hint from the conventional rice-flour bread baking process in which rice flour is mixed with water, SANYO has invented an out-of-the-box rice milling method which mills rice grain into rice paste after softening it in water.
   Further, use of a normal/reverse turn mechanism, which has been developed for use in rotary appliances, such as blenders, has enabled the entire rice bread baking process of milling (making rice paste), kneading, rising, and baking to be performed in one product unit. (Baking time: Approximately 4 hours)
   It's simple to use. In the bread pan, place 220g of washed rice, 210g of water, 4g of salt, 16g of sugar, and 10g of shortening. Place 50g of wheat gluten and 3g of dry yeast in the automatic ingredient dispenser on the upper side of the unit body. Then, just press the start button. After the automatic process of milling, kneading, rising, and baking, a tasty rice bread appears.
   It is not cooked rice, wheat bread, or even rice-flour bread. It's a Rice Bread made with rice at home! This new machine will enrich people's everyday life with easy and economical rice bread making.

2. "Gluten Free Setting" ideal for people with wheat allergy

   In 2005, SANYO released its first bread maker with a function to bake rice-flour bread free of wheat gluten (wheat-free) to bring the joy of eating bread to people who are allergic to wheat. With further development, the new bread maker "GOPAN" has been realized, which comes with a new "Wheat-Free Setting," in which rice bread containing no wheat components can be made without using a special bread mix.
   Making wheat-free rice bread is easy. In the bread pan, place 320g of rice, 320g of water, 32g of sugar, 7g of salt, 5g of dry yeast, and 80g of powdered rice (joshinko). Select "Wheat-Free Setting" and press the start button. (Baking time: Approximately 3 hours 20 minutes)
   With no need to use specially-blended ingredients as before, wheat-free rice bread baking can be done easily and economically at any time.

3. Total 22 Settings provided for making a wide variety of bread

   With the GOPAN bread maker, you can enjoy making a wide variety of nutritious bread rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, etc. by using ingredients like brown rice and minor grains. Of course, just as other conventional bread makers it is good at making wheat bread, bread dough, and wild yeast bread. The GOPAN bread maker is a product offering high cost performance and convenience by enabling bread making with the food materials around you instead of using a special bread mix.

4. Other Features

   "GOPAN" has the function of "Gluten and nut automated putting feature", and it is able to make the gourmet bread easily. "Jam Course" for the topping of bread is installed in "GOPAN" by using a delicious fruits. And, "GOPAN" has "Noodle Dough course", and can make the cloths of the noodle and pasta. "Rice cake course" is installed in "GOPAN ", rice cake can be made delicious and easily from the sticky rice. GoPan。用米做成的麵包,還真是沒聽說過啊!這款產品是個用心之作,它不是直接把米幹碾碎成米粉,而是加入水軟化之後,透過上下兩個馬達葉片,揉化成米團,進而完成對米麵包的烤製,出來之後,就是香甜可口的米麵包。而和米與小麥做成的麵包相比,對於一些人群(尤其是肥胖者來說)會比較健康點。

不過現在價格比較貴,大概需要 5 萬日元,約台幣 1.9 萬元,10 月份開始在日本發售,初期產量不會太高。在這之前,有可以直接放入米粉來做的機器,但是買磨好的米粉價格比直接米粒的價格要高。
